Certification for Organic Products

Organic Content Standard (OCS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) are non-food organic content standards. GOTS is exclusively for the organic textile material supply chain, other than organic textiles, OCS can also be applied for organic cosmetics, organic leather, and organic latex claims.

Both the standards remain in the industry for over ten years and the majority of certified products and facilities are related to the textile and clothing supply chain. Cotton is the most prominent organic fiber type whereas organically grown wool, jute, silk, linen, and hemp are also within the scope of GOTS and OCS.

Supply chain operations such as ginning for cotton, spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, finishing, printing, embroidering, washing, sewing as well as trading entities required to be certified and Retailers are encouraged to be certified and use their own identity as certified on the product labels.

The minimum organic content requirement of GOTS is 70% of the weight whereas 5% in OCS. GOTS is considered as the most comprehensive organic textile standard with addressing chemical, environmental, and social aspects whereas OCS addresses only the organic content in the product.
